Wildlife Management Advisory Council (NWT)

Overview

Function

The mandate of the Wildlife Management Advisory Council (NWT) is to advise appropriate Ministers on all matters relating to policy, legislation, regulation and administration respecting wildlife, habitat, harvesting, conservation, research and management in the Western Arctic Region.

Board Composition

The Council consists of six members, plus the Chair.

The Inuvialuit Game Council appoint three members, the Government of the Northwest Territories appoint two members, and Environment and Climate Change Canada appoints one member.

Alternate Members

There are six alternate members.

Chairperson

The Chairperson is appointed by the Government of the Northwest Territories, with the consent of the Inuvialuit Game Council and Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Vice-Chairperson

The Vice-Chairperson is designated by the Council members.

Quorum

Quorum consists of four members, including two members appointed by the Inuvialuit Game Council.

Appointment Instrument

Members are appointed by the appropriate appointing authority under section 14(46) of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (Canada).

Term Duration

Government members are indeterminate; Inuvialuit members hold 2-year terms; and the Chairperson holds a 5-year term.

Time and Travel Requirements

The Council holds at least four meetings per year unless decided by unanimous motion of the Council.

Additional meetings by teleconference may be scheduled as required.

Meetings are held in conjunction with co-management board meetings and may be held outside of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

Remuneration

Each party shall be responsible for funding the expenses for salaries or honoraria and other incidental travel expenses. Honorarium is paid to all board members who are not civil servants. Government agencies are responsible for their respective members’ travel expenses.

Other Considerations

The Council shall not hold any votes concerning the business of one of the governments unless a Council member of that government is present.
