Mackenzie River Basin Board

Overview

Function

The Mackenzie River Basin Board oversees the implementation of the Mackenzie River Basin Transboundary Waters Master Agreement. It provides advice and information on water management issues to support cooperative management and informed decision-making for the benefit of all jurisdictions with interests in the Mackenzie River Basin.

Board Composition

The Board consists of 13 members, including the Chairperson.

The federal government may appoint up to three members. The governments of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories may appoint up to two members each, including nominations from Aboriginal organizations.

Alternate Members

There are eight alternates on the Board.

Chairperson

The Chairperson is selected by the full Board membership at least every two years.

Vice-Chairperson

There is no Vice-Chairperson.

Quorum

Quorum is seven members or their alternates.

Appointment Instrument

Members are appointed by the appropriate appointing authority under section D of the Mackenzie River Basin Transboundary Waters Master Agreement.

Term Duration

A member sits at the pleasure of the Minister.

Time and Travel Requirements

The Board meets approximately three times a year or as needed. Meetings take place in various jurisdictions in person or by teleconference.

Remuneration

Members nominated by Aboriginal organizations shall be paid such fees or other remuneration as determined by the Board. An honorarium is not paid to government employees. Government agencies are responsible for their respective members’ travel expenses.
