Overview

Function

The Aurora College Board of Governors is responsible for overseeing and directing all matters respecting the management, administration, and control of Aurora College.

Board Composition

The Aurora College Board of Governors is comprised of the following members:

(i) one instructional staff member nominated by the instructional staff; (ii) one non-instructional staff member nominated by the non-instructional staff; (iii) one student member nominated by the student council or, if there is more than one student council, the student councils; (iv) ten members recommended by the Board, at least five of which must be Indigenous residents of the Northwest Territories; (v) any additional members that the Minister believes would promote the prescribed competencies. 

The President of Aurora College is a non-voting member of the Board.

Alternate Members

There are no alternate members.  The legislation does not provide for the appointment of alternate members to the Board of Governors.

Chairperson

The Commissioner in Executive Council (i.e. _ Cabinet) shall appoint a chairperson for the Board from among the Board’s members in accordance with section 12(1) of the Aurora College Act.

Vice-Chairperson

The Board shall select a vice-chairperson from among its members in accordance with its bylaws.

Quorum

A majority of the members appointed constitutes a quorum.

Appointment Instrument

Board Members are appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment in accordance with section 9 of the Aurora College Act.

Term Duration

Instructional staff, non-instructional staff and student members of the Board are appointed for two years. Public members of the Board are appointed for three years.

Remuneration

A member of the Board shall be paid the prescribed remuneration and shall be reimbursed for any prescribed expenses as outlined in the Regulations.

Other Considerations

Board members are selected based on competencies for the effective, efficient and sustainable governance of Aurora College.

Prescribed competencies are outlined in the Board of Governors Regulations.
